JCB) Appendix (401-424) adv./research methods

Advertising has become part of our society, it lets us know what we are interested in and things that we want to buy. Even though sometimes for the majority it can be a bit annoying because it interrupts you from watching or listening to what you are interested in. There are various ways of knowing and identifying social phenomena that are reflected in society. The reasons of societies thoughts about an advertisement and it also emphasizes why the producers of those advertisements chose to advertise their products in that way. In other words, these producers are smart for producing a commercial that can gain the audience’s attention very quickly. In order for sociologists to understand the social life they have to go in depth of explaining. The audience or consumers will notice this obvious fact and will take it as entertainment because it is true in the society we live in. This will then motivate them to want to buy it and then again, the owners of this product line will win. For instance, build arguments, make claims based on sociological facts, and develop theoretical concepts. Sociologists have methods of studying and understanding the appendix and advertising. For sociologists, there is different data as quantitative and qualitative data. These two concepts of data are different by quantitative means evidence that is numerically gathered, as for qualitative evidence is gathering information through words. Quantitative involves experimental groups, random assignments this experimental are very powerful of doing research. There are also questionnaires/surveys that involve people by getting real information from them, and sociologists get their opinion of how their life has been. But there is some disadvantage to these experiments because there might be response issues, get bias questions, also the work might never get done. I think that advertising has affected society to be more developed in the marketplace and consumer society. Advertising is where we maintain information of new materials that we need. It is the way companies keep people involved or interested in buying their brands. It’s really important that they remain as unbiased as possible. I believe that sociologists and psychologists must keep true to this or their research can go wrong. Surveys are one way to collect data, however, there are problems with it. Without any incentive, I would most likely never fill out a survey or genuinely fill one out (being truthful or willing to put the effort to accurate answer) especially if they were something that came in the mail. Person to person, there might be a problem with people lying, but when you walk up to someone to I think they are more willing to respond since ignoring the person asking could be something rude. A survey from the mail could be thrown away without no one knowing. Not only that, but people can get very nervous talking to strangers. In this reading, the relationship between advertising and society is greatly determined with sociological thoughts and it introduces the common theories that society and sociologists put together with social research.
