(JCB) Chapter 12: Music/ Racism and culture Appropriation

In sociology music is thought about in three ways: an art form, a commodity, and a tool of cultural resistance. We use music to satisfy and express our taste which I found so true. As much as everyone loves music, it can sometimes be used in different ways. It can be performed in very different ways. It is a huge thing for our society because even for most people they would call music a “hobby” and not by just practicing/performing it, but because people can not go a day without listening to music. I know for me music generates a sense of belonging. I’ve never thought of music being used as a political expression when I read this. I was shocked. Music is way too beautiful that people even create songs with lyrics that have some type of stuff that it represents and that is a way people get inspired to make music and spread their lyrics all over the world. Music is so amazing that is all over the world and such as cultures, race, religion, etc. Music has been used to sing about racism and injustice which is truly amazing and is a wonderful way to bring awareness. Hip hop regularly highlights inconsistencies between the ideal of the american dream and the reality for younger inner city blacks, I notice this all the time.People from different races use music to practice racism because when they create music the lyrics speak for the song itself. I personally believe that is sad because music is supposed to be beautiful like it is, and not perform to offend other people. I know kids who listen to Hip Hop and the lyrics about having money and buying a designer. African-American youth have an incredible musical influence through Hip Hop. I learned that appropriation is when a socially powerful group adopts the cultural practices of disadvantage groups as though they were their own.
