(H) 360-368 Page, showing My Color

From day one we become unique, there aren’t more than one sibling who is the same since birth. The very first moment that we are born we start to become separated from people all around. Having a baby should be one of the greatest things that can happen to a person, but having a baby in a time in which our world is divided and full of destruction among people is not so much. In this article by Clarence Page, he talks about growing up as a black boy and realizes his true identity. It starts off about him visiting Alabama and seeing segregation. He was from the north so it wasn’t as eye opening as it was down south. As he gets older he sees the differences from his white friends and their privilege. Children of all ages, faced discrimination because of something we refer to as “Segregation,” this word shows just one of the many ways in which we are divided. It is possible to say that everyone has been a child once in their lifetime, so everyone knows what it is like to be a child. He goes into his memory about his mother telling him not to “show his colors” while being in public with whites. He goes into all the struggles he had to face for being a black boy. He didn’t want the people to be color blind but he wanted the people to embrace his color and he wanted them to know him for him and not the color of his skin. Growing up he had to find his true identity. We all get knowledge of this at a young age, but we are kids, we want what we want and we notice when people treat us differently.
