(H) 425-431: Coontz, The American Family

This article talks about how people are comparing contemporary families back in the old days. It is heard that back in the old days families were so much better then what now a present day family. Apparently this is false. The families from before are not then today’s. Well, in fact, according to Coontz, families of today are actually better than those in the past. Within this article it simply tells us how families hundreds of years ago isn’t true. In the past families were worse than today. The only reason it seems as if the past families where better is due to radars parenting expectations. Many people didn’t understand that many families in the past harbored a great deal of issues that they suffered with. In this chapter it brought me to realization that their times were just as hard as ours and many people might argue that they were worse. Apparently, families of today are far better than those in the past because fathers spend more time with their children, mothers can work outside of the house and children don’t necessarily need to work. In my opinion, contemporary families seem to have a happier life and a stronger relationship with each other than those of the past. Many families are more aware of what they are getting themselves into because of the mistakes past generations have made.
